Lightweight Structures B.V., based in Delft, Netherlands, focuses its business on creative product development, engineering and manufacturing of structures for markets where weight reduction is one of the design drivers, while improving sustainability, safety and performance.

Our core competences are in the composites (fibre reinforced plastics) area. Roughly, (carbon) composites are the end solution when a weight requirement is dominant. Their specific stiffness (stiffness/density) is best of common engineering materials!

Effectiveness of construction materials
carbon fiber UD glass fiber UD steel titanium aluminium magnesium wood plastic (unreinf)		Evaluating specific stiffness is a way of comparing materials of different density and elastic moduli to find the most effective construction material. The specific stiffness is calculated by dividing Young’s modulus by density. In this comparison aluminium is equal to steel because both aluminium’s stiffness and density are equally lower than steel. The (unidirectional, UD) carbon fibre composite however outperforms both due to its high modulus and low density. This is especially important in many moving structures like machine parts, hand tools and all kinds of vehicles where lower weight allows for faster movement and accelerations or lower fuel consumption.
