| Hybrid bridge across the river Dommel |

Beginning 2005 a hybrid bridge (composite/steel/concrete) was constructed on the High Tech Campus of Philips Electronics, across the river Dommel near the city of Eindhoven, Netherlands. This bridge was designed by the architects of Juurling + Geluk in Rotterdam; DHV were the engineers.
A consortium of Ballast Nedam, Poly Products and Light weight Structures B.V. won the tender assignment of Philips Electronics for the construction of the bridge. Based on ecological (the bridge is in a protected area), technical (innovative image) and economical (competition with steel and concrete) arguments a hybrid structure was chosen. The bridge consists of steel beams, a concrete deck and a composite shell. The span of the bridge is approx. 32 m and the width 4 m.
Ballast Nedam was main contractor and project coordinator. They were responsible for the design abutments and the (non-composite) structural parts, and the tnstallment of the bridge. Lightweight Structures B.V. was responsible for the structural design and detailed design of the composite parts. Dimensioning of the bridge was dominated by the displacement under its own weight and eigenfrequency.
PolyProducts manufactured the composite parts. The composite shell is assembled from double-curved sections, measuring 3x4x1 m.
